02 February 2017 - Out of the Ashes

Glasgow School of Art
Some of the biggest names in British art are helping to raise funds for GSA.
They include: Grayson Perry to Anish Kapoor and Antony Gormley.
Artists have created artworks from ashes of the fire gutted Mackintosh building.
The art works will be auctioned by Christie’s in March.
The aim is to raise £13.5m to rebuild the Mackintosh-designed building.

Right now at Red Rag Gallery in the Cotswolds is the annual 'Scottish Show'.

30 April 2015 - Shortlist Announced

The shortlist for this year's BP Portrait Award have been announced.
In addition to a Spanish painter and Israel artist is Michael Gaskell.
Gaskell is a British artist and past runner-up in the award.
Nearly 2750 portraits were submitted from 92 different countries.
The winner of the £30,000 prize will be announced in June.

02 April 2015 - Vettriano Auction




Art works by the Scottish artist Jack Vettriano has raised more than £800K at Bonham's auction in Edinburgh.
The highest price achieved was for 'Waltzers', which sold for £236,500.

A total of seven paintings sold. Five paintings failed to reach their reserve prices.
The collection was offered for sale by an anonymous collector.

27 May 2014 - Death of leading Scottish artist




Oil painting by George Devlin

Leading Glasgow artist George Devlin died yesterday aged 76.
He was an internationally known artist with a international reputation for his landscape and still life paintings.

George was born in Springburn and trained at Glasgow School of Art.
He exhibited widely throughout his career at numerous galleries including Red Rag Gallery.
He is survived by his wife Marie and daughter Nuala.


24 May 2014 - Fire damages Glasgow Art School

One of Scotland's most cherised buildings has been severely damaged by fire.
The Glasgow School of Art Charles Rennie Mackintosh building was set ablaze yesterday after a projector exploded in the basement.
All staff and art students were said to have escaped safely.

The world famous Charles Rennie Mackintosh building has been a working art school since 1909.

'Still Life with Poppies' by Mary Davidson

Scottish artists Mary Davidson, Gary Morrow, Mairi Stewart and Helen Turner are among a number of artists participating in the latest Red Rag show in Bath. Changing Seasons is the title of the latest modern art show at Bath gallery. It is a mixed exhibition which captures the essence of each changing season. Altogether there are eleven artists participating in the show which starts Sunday 13 April and continues until 27 April.

'Steeple Chasers' - Catriona Campbell

To coincide with the Cheltenham Racing Festival which is taking place next week Red Rag have released some wonderful new equine paintings. The colourful oil paintings are from Scottish artist Catriona Campbell.

Catriona studied at the Glasgow School of Art and was a student of David Donaldson and Mary Armour. Her paintings display a continuing passion and interest in figure painting. 19 April 2013 - Storm Thorgerson




British artist Storm Thorgerson who designed some of the most famous music album covers of all time has died aged 69. His artworks were used for album covers of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Muse, Genesis, Phish and many other major rock bands.

Thorgerson had a long association with Pink Floyd, designing the vast majority of their album covers, including Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals. Pink Floyd guitarist and vocalist Dave Gilmour said the artworks Thorgerson created for the band had been "an inseparable part of our work". He died surrounded by family and friends after a long battle with cancer.


07 April 2013 - Andy Warhol Exhibition

A free exhibition is to take place at the Scottish Parliament from 4 October until 3 November featuring paintings and prints by the world renowned artist Andy Warhol. The exhibition will coincide with activities at Holyrood which will promote Dunfermline-born Andrew Carnegie's international legacy and will be the first time the works have been displayed in Scotland. The majority of the art works will come from the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh in the USA.

30 March 2013 - New TV Arts Show




A search to find a portrait artist has been launched, with a £10,000 commission prize to paint author Hilary Mantel as first prize. Comedian Frank Skinner and TV Broadcaster Joan Bakewell will present the Sky Arts series. Artists are invited to apply for a series of art shows which will be held in Dublin, Cardiff, Glasgow and London over the summer. Paintings from all the finalists in the competition will be displayed at the National Portrait Gallery. Featured artist Simon Davis is a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters(RP) and a past prize winner in the prestigious National Portrait Gallery BP prize.


27 March 2013 - More Than A Game

Opening today at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow is a new exhibition which looks at Scotland's relationship with football and the skills of the modern day footballer.Visitors will be able to see the world's oldest football which is thought to date back to 1540 and was once the property of Mary Queen of Scots.

The exhibition draws on items from Hampden Park's Scottish Football Museum and has been curated in collaboration with the Scottish Football Museum. It highlights individuals like Rose Reilly Peralta, the only Scottish player to have lifted the World Cup, and Andrew Watson the world's first black footballer to play at international level. The exhibition continues until end of August

'Lighthouse' by David Schofield

Red Rag Gallery in Stow have released new paintings from Scottish surrealist painter David Schofield who trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. Since 1997 after a period of lecturing and working as a freelance illustrator, Schofield has been extensively exhibiting as a fine artist. David is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy and has been honored by various awards from the Royal Glasgow Institute.

'Topsy Turvy' by Joe Hargan

13 March 2013 - Chatsworth Exhibition

Chatsworth House in Derbyshire is the venue for an art show featuring works by the late British artist William Turnbull. A figurehead of the post-war modernist movement Turnbull is known for his bronze sculptures and abstract expressionist paintings. The exhibition includes paintings and drawings along with large-scale outdoor sculptures displayed in the gardens of the stately home.

The exhibition continues until 30 June 2013

04 March 2013 - Sir Peter Blake Album Cover




Sir Peter Blake, who designed the famous album cover for The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, is for the first time to appear on the front of a record in person. He appears on a special edition Madness album, 'The Ten Commandments', dressed as Moses in tribute to one of the discarded suggested titles the band considered for the album. Other album sleeve designs by Sir Peter Blake include: Band Aid's charity single, Paul Weller's Stanley Road and Oasis' Stop the Clocks.

A new art resale service has been launched by Red Rag. The service offers an alternative to Buying and Selling art online or at auction. The scheme involves Red Rag Gallery acting as a broker on behalf of clients wishing to sell British art works, advising on market value and finding art buyers. Commission rates are similar to those of major auction houses and are inclusive of charges for promotion on the website or illustrations in catalogues. The majority of paintings sold are high value paintings by well known British artists - most of who have shown with Red Rag.

23 June 2012 - Artist Mary Fedden dies




British artist Mary Fedden

Leading British artist Mary Fedden has died aged 96. She was born in Bristol on August 14 1915 and became one of Britain's best-known and most sought after painters. She was elected to the Royal Academy in 1992 and made an OBE in 1997.

After leaving the Slade School of Art, Mary Fedden made a living as a jobbing painter, undertaking commissions and teaching. The two most important influences on her work were Matisse and Ben Nicholson. With their inspiration she produced paintings of cats and flowers on windowsills, old-fashioned pots, speckled birds eggs and playing cards - all of which became eagerly collected. Her work was underpinned by a rigorous sense of composition and the collision of brilliant, sensuous yet subtle colours, to produce blazing and bracing visions of the everyday.

19 June 2012 - Jack Vettriano Retrospective

Scottish artist Jack Vettriano is to hold a major retrospective of his art work in Scotland next year.The artist, famous for his paintings of women and couples in highly-charged erotic poses is planning to stage the exhibition in Glasgow. In an interview with the US magazine Vanity Fair, Vettriano revealed he has just finished curating his 20-year retrospective.

The interview details the fierce attacks by a number of critics who do not regard Vettriano's art work as 'proper' art and his rejection by the Scottish art establishment. Vettriano, who was made an OBE in 2003 for services to the visual arts, gives a robust response when asked about his detractors pointing to him copying poses from the Illustrator's Figure Reference Manual for The Singing Butler - which became the most expensive painting by a Scottish artist when it sold for £750,000 eight years ago.


15 June 2012 - Alberto Morrocco Art Sale

Art works from one of the leading Scottish artists of the 20th century are to go on public display ahead of a £1 million auction this summer. The paintings come from the private art collection of the late Alberto Morrocco, who was born in Aberdeen in 1917 and died in 1998.

Alberto Morrocco was known for his Picasso-influenced landscapes, still-life, figure painting and interiors. His children are selling more than 180 art pieces at the auction. Highlights of the upcoming sale will be exhibited at the Mansfield Traquair Centre, Mansfield Place on 20-21 June. A spokeswoman said: 'The exhibition presents a fantastic first-time opportunity to see these art works in his native country.'

Latest Print artist at Red Rag - Deborah Phillips

The latest artist to join the growing portfolio of leading British artists promoted by Red Rag is Scottish artist Deborah Phillips. Deborah Phillips was born in Dundee and is the daughter of well known Scottish artist, Douglas Phillips. She attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and graduated with BA (honours) in 1987. She is known for her lively and colourful landscape art works of the Scottish countryside.

Known for her paintings of circus performers and animals Alison produces paintings in an appealing naive style. Scottish artist Peter King

Red Rag have announced that the distinctive art works by Glasgow born artist Peter King are now available from the gallery. King was born in 1953 and studied art at the Glasgow Art School. Following that he taught Art and Design in Scottish schools for over 30 years. In 2010 he retired from teaching to focus on painting professionally. Since then his paintings have become highly collectable and are in many art collections across the UK, Europe, North America and Japan.

Peter King is fascinated by the aspects of changing moods of light, weather and seasons. The sources of his ideas are the seasonal effects of nature on the surrounding environment. Colour and the tactile qualities of paint are essential to his painting style. The light, colour and weathered landscape of Kintyre, The Clyde Valley and the vast panorama of land and sky dominated by Tinto Hill and the Scottish Borders are a constant source of ideas and inspiration to him. 14 July 2011 - Scottish born artist dies

William Crozier, the Scottish-born Irish artist has died age 81. He was born in the Glasgow suburb of Coker in 1930 and later moved to the coastal Scottish town of Troon in Ayrshire. He was educated at the Glasgow School of Art between 1949 and 1953. Crozier was known for painting landscapes which overcame the boundaries between representational and abstract genres. His work often contained references to nature, although in later years he moved towards a more representational language. His abstract landscapes and still life painting used colour to convey an emotional intensity

Following his graduation from Glasgow School of Art Crozier moved to London and in 1949 and 1953.Crozier exhibited his art works in London, Glasgow, Dublin and all over Europe. He was an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He died peacefully aged 81 at home on 12 July 2011.

Leading Scottish artist Simon Laurie is the latest name to join the highly successfull portfolio of Red Rag Gallery artists. Laurie who was born in Glasgow in 1964 and studied at the Glasgow School of Fine Art is a member of the Royal Scottish Watercolourists (RSW) and the prestigious Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI). 'Tallship Reflection' by Malcolm Cheape

Leading Scottish marine artist Malcolm Cheape is the latest name to join the Red Rag group of Scottish artists. Born in 1964 Cheape is a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee. His primary subject matter is the contemporary and historical world of commercial, industrial and naval shipping.

Malcolm Cheap works primarily in ink and acrylic. His clever usage of collage makes his paintings truly unique. Relying on tonal effect, a limited range of colours and clever use of collage, his paintings are strikingly distinctive capturing the grace and beauty of the old sailing ships, the vigour and power of warships and the special charm of fishing boats working the Scottish waters.

07 February 2011 - Art Society 50th Anniversary

The Federation of British Artists (FBA) celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. The milestone will coincide with a new exhibition 'Pure Gold' which features British art and opens 9 February. The British art show takes place at the Mall Galleries in London, will contain paintings by Edgar Degas, Walter Sickert, John Singer Sargent and Augustus John.

Although the FBA is only 50 years old the individual art societies which make up the Federation date back to 1823, and the exhibition contains the art works of British artists from then to the current day. Scottish artists who are represented at Red Rag Gallery and are members of the individual FBA art societies include George Devlin.

01 January 2011 - OBE for Scottish Artist

Glasgow-born painter, John Lowrie Morrison, has been recognised in the New Year's Honours list for his services to art and charity. John has donated numerous art works and profits from his paintings to worthy causes and described the OBE as "a simply marvellous honour".

He started his artistic career drawing life figures, winning a prize at the Glasgow School of Art. After gaining a diploma in education at Jordanhill College, he began a 25-year teaching career in Argyll in 1973. In 1997 he decided to earn a living as a full-time painter, spending most of the next six years painting in Argyll and the Hebrides. Over the last 13 years his Scottish art work has become hugely popular.


08 December 2010 - ROI Annual Art Show opens in London

The annual art exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, opens at the Mall Galleries in London on Wednesday 8 December and continues until Sunday 19 December. It is the only major British art society that is devoted exclusively to oil painting. The show features a wide variety of contemporary landscape, figurative and still life paintings by emerging and established artists working in oil today. Other highlights include the Winsor & Newton under 35 Oil Painting Awards and 'The Artist' magazine competition winner.

07 December 2010 - Turner Art Prize won by Glasgow artist

Glasgow-born artist Susan Philipsz has won this year's Turner Prize for a sound installation that features her singing three versions of a Scottish lament. She beat Dexter Dalwood, Angela de la Cruz and The Otolith Group to take the award and was presented with the £25,000 prize at a ceremony at Tate Britain.


20 November 2010 - More needed from Arts Budget

The Scottish government wants Creative Scotland who is responsible for arts and film to "achieve more" after agreeing to maintain its 2011/12 budget. The budget remains at £35.5m. The government estimates creative industries support more than 60,000 jobs.

Minister for Culture and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop said: "Almost all cultural spend will be through the organisations we fund and I am challenging them to do more with what they receive and continue to strive for more efficiency."

02 September 2010 - Glasgow Boys in London

Next month the Royal Academy of Arts will present the first exhibition in London for over 40 years to celebrate the achievement of the Glasgow Boys, the loosely knit group of young painters who created a stir at home and abroad in the final decades of the nineteenth century. The exhibition will feature over 80 oil paintings, watercolours and pastels from public and private art collections by such artists as Guthrie, Lavery, Melville, Crawhall, Walton, Henry and Hornel.

02 August 2010 - Major Exhibition at Kelvingrove

Kelvingrove Art Gallery is showing 'Pioneering Painters: The Glasgow Boys 1880'1900' until 27 September. This is the first major exhibition devoted to this influential group of artists since 1968. It will be the definitive Glasgow Boys exhibition, comprising around 100 oil paintings and 50 works on paper. Works from Glasgow Museums' collections will sit alongside other major pictures brought together from public and private collections across the country. A condensed version of the exhibition will later tour to the Royal Academy of Arts in London.

The Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition starts today in Edinburgh and runs until 23 June. This year marks a change in the direction for the RSA with the open submission policy discontinued and replaced by a curated exhibition of invited art works on a particular theme from both members and non-members. 08 April 2010 - Glasgow Boys Art Show

Opening tomorrow Friday 9 April at Glasgow's Kelvingrove Museum is an exhibition of art work by the artists known as the Glasgow Boys. More than 140 art works by the group are being shown before the show transfers to London.

The Glasgow Boys rebelled against the Scottish art scene of the late-19th Century and caused uproar when they held their first major art show in 1885. Their bold use of colour, natural subject matter and use of light earned them acclaim, and the name which continues to link them today. The art show will run until 27 September.

25 February 2010 - Scottish Art Galleries Still Attracting Visitors

According to the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions Public art galleries in Scotland continue to attract large numbers of people. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum was still the most popular Scottish tourist attraction in 2009, but visitor numbers dropped by 5% to just over 1.3m. The National Gallery Complex in Edinburgh saw a 9% increase in visitors to 900,000 over the year.

14 January 2010 - Leading Scottish artist dies

Leading Scottish artist James Robertson has died aged 78. He was born in Fife in 1931 and died in Renfrewshire 7 January 2010.

Jimmy lived in Renfrewshire for more than 30 years enjoying the change of colours and the light on the sea as the seasons changed. He was a gifted teacher and many of the Scottish artists who show at Red Rag have been taught and influenced by him.


07 January 2010 - Iconic Images on Latest Stamps




British art ' George Underwoood

The Royal Mail's New Year stamp collection for 2010 features what it says are ten of the most iconic album covers of the last 40 years. Each depicts a famous album cover with a disc coming out of the sleeve and appearing 'outside' the stamp.

One of the stamps features David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (1972) album cover.Heddon Street in London's West End is the scene for the painting. Photographer Brian Ward helped to conceptualise Bowie's notion of the alien pop star and the sleeve was designed by Red Rag artist George Underwood with artwork by Terry Pastor.

29 July 2009 - Lunch Time Art Talks

As part of the Fleming lunch time talk series an art talk is taking place next Wednesday 5 August at The Fleming Collection in London at 1.10pm. The informal talk lasts about 20 minutes and entrance is free.

Next week's art talk is on the artist Muirhead Bone and his art pieces of Piccadilly Circus. Bone produced one etching and one drypoint of Piccadilly Circus in 1907 and 1915 respectively.

12 June 2009 - Art Degree Show News

The degree show at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen opens tomorrow 13 June and continues until 20 June.

Final year students will showcase their art work as part of the annual Degree Show. The art show is an opportunity to see emerging talent - and speak to the artists themselves about their creations. The work on show includes fashion and textiles, 3D and product design, graphics, digital media, visual communication, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and electronic media.


23 May 2009 - Scottish Art Degree Show

Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design is holding its annual degree show at Vision Building in Dundee. It is the largest exhibition of contemporary art work in the city and marks the culmination of four years work from the art students at the college.

The degree art show displays a range of artwork from paintings to works of graphic design, interactive music projects and jewellery. The art show runs from 23 May until 6 June

James Watt is an immensely successful Scottish contemporary artist. His trademark Scottish Puffer boat paintings can be found in numerous public art collections as well as the private art collections of Her Majesty the Queen, His Royal Highness Prince Philip and The Princess Royal.

The featured painting is of 'Harbour Office, Bowling'. Bowling is a picturesque Scottish location situated on the Forth & Clyde canal.

Leading Scottish artists Peter Howson has been advised by doctors not to paint for several months following a physical breakdown. Howson was hospitalised two weeks ago and told by doctors to curtail his hectic work schedule. It is understood he has now stopped work for at least 3-6 months

Peter Howson is internationally known for his contemporary paintings of muscular figures. Recently he has been focused on religious themes

17 April 2009 - Irish and Scottish art show opens

A two person art show is taking place at Oisin Gallery in Dublin. The art exhibition features Scottish artist Stephanie Rew and Still Life art works by Irish artist Niall Toolan.The art show opens today and runs until 25 April.

The art exhibition runs from 17-21 April. It features portraits and still life paintings influenced by tradition and Flemish Baroque style


20 March 2009 - Ex-Edinburgh Art Student Dies

British artist Margaret Mellis has died aged 95. Mellis was a pivotal figure in modern British art leading the migration of artists to St Ives in Cornwall from 1939.

Educated at Edinburgh College of Art Mellis's teachers included the Scottish colourist Samuel John Peploe. William Gear and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham were also fellow art students. Mellis was an excellent painter who produced many colourful collages, but she will probably be most remembered for her driftwood sculptures.

A new art exhibition which showcases the art work of 60 promising artists is to take place at the Royal Scottish Academy's upper and lower galleries on The Mound. The inaugural RSA New Contemporaries show has developed from the annual RSA student exhibition and aims to give emerging artists in Scotland the opportunity to promote their work

09 February 2009 - Pay To View Art

For the first time in 10 years people have paid to see an art exhibition at Kelvingrove Art Gallery. Over 11,500 art enthusiasts viewed 'Impressionism and Scotland' which featured paintings by Monet, Whistler and Degas next to art work by the Scottish artists they inspired

Art visitors were charged £5 towards the cost of shipping the artworks from London, Edinburgh and New York. The art show traced the development of the Impressionism movement of the 1850s to the Scottish Colourists of the 1930s.

31 January 2009 - Scottish Art Exhibition

An art exhibition from the Hunterian's collection of 'Glasgow Boys' drawings and watercolour paintings. The 'Glasgow Boys' was an informal association of some 20 artists including James Guthrie, George Henry, E. A. Hornel, John Lavery and E. A. Walton.

The exhibition takes place at Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow and continues until 16 May


06 January 2009 - Arts Centre gets £3/4m upgrade

Edinburgh's City Arts Centre is closing for six months from May to December so that £750,000 can be spent on improving heating, lighting and ventilation systems. The Arts Centre moved to the site in 1980 and now houses more than 3,000 pieces of Scottish art.

Councillor Deidre Brock, said: "The City Art Centre is a fantastic asset for Edinburgh and upgrades will help ensure that the venue continues to be one of the best places in the city to see the widest range of art exhibitions."

19 September 2008 - Scottish Artist: Hamish MacDonald Dies



Leading Scottish artist Hamish MacDonald has died aged 73. Hamish was known for Scottish landscapes and seascapes painted in the tradition of the Scottish colourists. His paintings have been displayed in many Scottish art galleries including the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art.
