Jock MacInnes: Scottish contemporary art, artist and paintings

Jock MacInnes was born in 1943. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art where he graduated in 1966.

Like many Artists Jock MacInnes spent his early career teaching Art - in his case at the Glasgow School of Art. Throughout his time teaching Jock continued with his own painting regularly exhibiting and winning art Awards and Scholarships. These included: the Paisley Art Institute, Drawing competition; the Cargill Award, Royal Glasgow Institute; and the Colquhoun Memorial Painting Competition.

Demand for Jock MacInnes paintings increased to such an extent that he left Glasgow Art School to concentrate on full time painting in 1999. Prior to this MacInnes had been elected as a member of the prestigious RGI in 1988 and joined the Council of the RGI in 1995.

Although Jock MacInnes paintings are influenced by the Scottish Colourist artists, he describes himself as a 'Modernist' at heart. And so he draws upon inspiration from English artists such as Nicholson, Scott and Wallis together with European artists Matisse, Braque and Morandi.

MacInnes has a recurring fascination with marine painting. But he also produces stunning landscape and still life paintings, which have the same simplicity. Above all MacInnes paintings have a quietness to them. Unusually he prepares all his own painting grounds, a type of gesso on board. Then with great skill MacInnes not only draws and paints on to the surface, he also abrades and scrapes into the canvas. In doing so MacInnes creates a strong feeling of atmosphere and mood.

Collectors of Jock MacInnes paintings include: The Dick Institute, Kilmarnock; Paisley Art Institute; Nationwide Building Society; Royal Bank of Scotland; and Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities.

In addition to Red Rag Scottish Art Gallery Jock MacInnes has exhibited at other leading Scottish Art Galleries including the Royal Glasgow Institute. Jock also shows at a number of other leading contemporary British Art Galleries. Each painting at Red Rag is sourced from the Jock MacInnes artist studio and like all Red Rag Scottish art and Contemporary art it can be shipped worldwide.
