Scottish Art and Artists at Red Rag Gallery
Artist: Peter KING

Peter King was born in Glasgow in 1953. He studied art, specialising in drawing and painting, at the Glasgow Art School under the tutelage of David Donaldson RSA and Duncan Shanks RSA. specialising in drawing & painting.

Peter taught Art and Design in Scottish schools for over 30 years and was Principal Teacher in Lanarkshire for over 20 years. He also holds a senior marker's position with S.Q.A. In 2010 he retired from teaching to focus on painting professionally.

He has created a distinctive style of paintings from a range of motifs, which he constantly returns to and reinterprets. He is fascinated by the aspects of changing moods of light, weather and seasons. The sources of his ideas are the seasonal effects of nature on the surrounding environment. Colour and the tactile qualities of paint are essential to his painting style; the marks, free paint and the textured shapes become field, wood and sky. Peter finds that the light, colour and weathered landscape of Kintyre, The Clyde Valley and the vast panorama of land and sky dominated by Tinto Hill and the Scottish Borders are a constant source of ideas and inspiration.

In 2010 Peter was awarded the Awards House for an Art Lover by the RGI.

Today Peter King contemporary paintings are held in many art collections. His art work is represented in collections across the UK, Europe and North America and Japan. His art work has also featured in The Sunday Times Magazine (April 2000) in an article on contemporary British Landscape Painting.

In addition to Red Rag British Art Gallery Peter King has exhibited at other leading Scottish Art Art Galleries. Each painting at Red Rag is sourced from the Peter King artist studio and like all Red Rag Scottish art and Contemporary art it can be shipped worldwide.

This is the Seascape art page from Red Rag Scottish Art Gallery featuring the best in contemporary Scottish art. Throughout the year Red Rag features Scottish art from artists who specialise in creating fine Seascape paintings. Today is no exception you will find Red Rag Scottish Art Gallery has an extensive collection of Seascape art and paintings by leading contemporary artists.

Human beings have always had an intimate relationship with the water. Given the amount of the earth’s surface which is covered in water and the often unpredictable and life-changing nature of the sea, it is little wonder that seascapes have been such a popular subject for so long and no surprise that seascape paintings have an important place in the history of art.

Seascape paintings have a long history in both the Eastern and Western worlds. The walls of homes have been adorned with seascape paintings since the art of the secular painting first began to overtake religious works in numbers and importance.

As a country with an extensive coastline, paintings of seascapes have always had a special attraction to Scottish artists. All the seascape paintings at Red Rag showcase the talent of Scottish painters and their ability to depict changing light on water and rapidly altering climatic conditions. Many of the Scottish artists who have painted these seascape paintings are also talented landscape painters, or worked in other genres as well as seascapes, such as still life or portraiture.
