Artist: Saul ROBERTSON

Saul Robertson is a young painter whose figurative oil paintings with intriguing narrative themes have already won him major art awards. Robertson was born in 1978. He studied drawing and painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art .

Whilst at Art College Saul Robertson's was nominated for the Scottish International Educational Trust Award and won The Ninewells MRI Imaging Purchase Prize. Soon after graduating Robertson was voted Young Artist of the Year, at the The Hunting Art Prizes at the Royal College of Art in London. Since then Saul has won numerous art awards including: The City of Glasgow Prize, The David Cargill Senior Award, and The David Cargill Award, at The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. In 2005 he won second prize at the B.P Portrait award at the National Portrait Gallery, London for his painting “The Universe”. More recently Saul was awarded an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award by The Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation in Canada, and was shortlisted for The Insight Investment Newcomers Prize at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London.

Saul Robertson has always enjoyed painting from firsthand experience of the subject matter and for him still-life, portraiture and figurative painting are genres that provide a rich source of ideas and challenges. His skilful, sensitive paintings demonstrate strongly that even within well-tested themes and subjects there remains plenty of scope for innovative images and finished paintings of immense interest and impact.
