Stephen Shankland was born in Scotland in 1971. He studied contemporary art at Read more

art, artist and paintings">Gray's School of Art Aberdeen where he gained a BA (hons) Design 1st Class. This was followed by a further years study at Gray's where Shankland gained a Master of Art and Design.

Between 1996 and 2005 Stephen Shankland has been the recipient of several art Awards and Commissions for his contemporary paintings. These include: Gray's Former Students; Aberdeen Art Gallery, First Prize in 2001; and First Prize in the 2004 BP National Portrait Award, National Portrait Gallery, London; and runner-up in the 2005 Lynn Painter-Stainer's art awards. In 2008 Shankland was appointed a member of The Royal Society of Portrait Painters

Stephen Shankland contemporary paintings contain thoughtful figures usually wrapped up in a sense of narrative. Composition and draughtsmanship as well as colour all contribute to the story that unfolds in each painting scene. Figures gaze from their world with the story evident in their eyes. Often the figures share the composition with objects that have symbolic relevance.

Stephen has painted portraits of a number of celebrities. These include actors Peter Mullan , Bernard Hill and Ian McDiarmid

Stephen Shankland has entries in several art publications. These include his 1999 entry in The Dictionary of Artists and David Buckman, Art Dictionaries. Stephen has also been listed in the Scotsman newspaper as one of the Top 20 artists for Scottish Art Investment.
