Gray's is the smallest of the major Scottish art schools, and the only one to require Fine Art students to choose a discipline and stick to it ' from painting, sculpture, printmaking and the more recently added "photographic and electronic media" (PEM). Duncan of Jordanstone and College of Art and Design was established as part of the Dundee Institute of Art and Technology in 1892. It became an autonomous institution in 1975 before merging with the University of Dundee in 1996. It is regarded as one of the leading Colleges of Art and Design in Britain. There are approximately 1000 undergraduate, taught Masters and research postgraduate students. As part of a modern University, students and staff at DJCAD can take advantage of all that a large educational institution has to offer, whilst retaining the special ethos of a Scottish College of Art.

The Studio Art School is approved by the City & Guilds of London Institute, and is the only centre in the UK with approval to offer the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design by distance learning.
