The diversity of Joan Gillespies work is quite extraordinary. It ranges from enchanting collection of Portraits, Figurative works, Landscapes and Still Life. Her fresh-faced portraits definine the essence of feminine grace and beauty. Scottish artists Mary Davidson, Gary Morrow, Mairi Stewart and Helen Turner are among a number of artists participating in the latest Red Rag show in Bath. Changing Seasons is the title of the latest modern art show at Bath gallery. It is a mixed exhibition which captures the essence of each changing season. To coincide with the Cheltenham Racing Festival which is taking place next week Red Rag have released some wonderful new equine paintings. The colourful oil paintings are from Scottish artist Catriona Campbell. Catriona studied at the Glasgow School of Art and was a student of David Donaldson and Mary Armour. Her paintings display a continuing passion and interest in figure painting. She has a real love and knowledge of horses which is evident in her work. British artist Storm Thorgerson who designed some of the most famous music album covers of all time has died aged 69. His artworks were used for album covers of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Muse, Genesis, Phish and many other major rock bands. Thorgerson had a long association with Pink Floyd, designing the vast majority of their album covers, including Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and Animals. Pink Floyd guitarist and vocalist Dave Gilmour said the artworks Thorgerson created for the band had been "an inseparable part of our work". He died surrounded by family and friends after a long battle with cancer. 07 April 2013 - Andy Warhol Exhibition A free exhibition is to take place at the Scottish Parliament from 4 October until 3 November featuring paintings and prints by the world renowned artist Andy Warhol. The exhibition will coincide with activities at Holyrood which will promote Dunfermline-born Andrew Carnegie's international legacy and will be the first time the works have been displayed in Scotland. A search to find a portrait artist has been launched, with a 10,000 commission prize to paint author Hilary Mantel as first prize. Comedian Frank Skinner and TV Broadcaster Joan Bakewell will present the Sky Arts series. Artists are invited to apply for a series of art shows which will be held in Dublin, Cardiff, Glasgow and London over the summer. Paintings from all the finalists in the competition will be displayed at the National Portrait Gallery. Featured artist Simon Davis is a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters(RP) and a past prize winner in the prestigious National Portrait Gallery BP prize. 27 March 2013 - More Than A Game Opening today at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow is a new exhibition which looks at Scotland's relationship with football and the skills of the modern day footballer.Visitors will be able to see the world's oldest football which is thought to date back to 1540 and was once the property of Mary Queen of Scots. The exhibition draws on items from Hampden Park's Scottish Football Museum and has been curated in collaboration with the Scottish Football Museum. It highlights individuals like Rose Reilly Peralta, the only Scottish player to have lifted the World Cup, and Andrew Watson the world's first black footballer to play at international level. Red Rag Gallery in Stow have released new paintings from Scottish surrealist painter David Schofield who trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. Since 1997 after a period of lecturing and working as a freelance illustrator, Schofield has been extensively exhibiting as a fine artist. David is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy and has been honored by various awards from the Royal Glasgow Institute. A figurehead of the post-war modernist movement Turnbull is known for his bronze sculptures and abstract expressionist paintings. Sir Peter Blake, who designed the famous album cover for The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, is for the first time to appear on the front of a record in person. He appears on a special edition Madness album, 'The Ten Commandments', dressed as Moses in tribute to one of the discarded suggested titles the band considered for the album. A new art resale service has been launched by Red Rag. The service offers an alternative to Buying and Selling art online or at auction. The scheme involves Red Rag Gallery acting as a broker on behalf of clients wishing to sell British art works, advising on market value and finding art buyers. Commission rates are similar to those of major auction houses and are inclusive of charges for promotion on the website or illustrations in catalogues. The majority of paintings sold are high value paintings by well known British artists - most of who have shown with Red Rag. Featured resale painting above - Darren Baker 'Looking Down' 23 June 2012 - Artist Mary Fedden dies Leading British artist Mary Fedden has died aged 96. She was born in Bristol on August 14 1915 and became one of Britain's best-known and most sought after painters. She was elected to the Royal Academy in 1992 and made an OBE in 1997. After leaving the Slade School of Art, Mary Fedden made a living as a jobbing painter, undertaking commissions and teaching. The two most important influences on her work were Matisse and Ben Nicholson. With their inspiration she produced paintings of cats and flowers on windowsills, old-fashioned pots, speckled birds eggs and playing cards - all of which became eagerly collected. Her work was underpinned by a rigorous sense of composition and the collision of brilliant, sensuous yet subtle colours, to produce blazing and bracing visions of the everyday. Mary Fedden limited edition prints are available from Red Rag to view click on the link above. 19 June 2012 - Jack Vettriano Retrospective Scottish artist Jack Vettriano is to hold a major retrospective of his art work in Scotland next year.The artist, famous for his paintings of women and couples in highly-charged erotic poses is planning to stage the exhibition in Glasgow. In an interview with the US magazine Vanity Fair, Vettriano revealed he has just finished curating his 20-year retrospective. The interview details the fierce attacks by a number of critics who do not regard Vettriano's art work as 'proper' art and his rejection by the Scottish art establishment. Vettriano, who was made an OBE in 2003 for services to the visual arts, gives a robust response when asked about his detractors pointing to him copying poses from the Illustrator's Figure Reference Manual for The Singing Butler - which became the most expensive painting by a Scottish artist when it sold for 750,000 eight years ago. 15 June 2012 - Alberto Morrocco Art Sale Art works from one of the leading Scottish artists of the 20th century are to go on public display ahead of a 1 million auction this summer. The paintings come from the private art collection of the late Alberto Morrocco, who was born in Aberdeen in 1917 and died in 1998. Alberto Morrocco was known for his Picasso-influenced landscapes, still-life, figure painting and interiors. His children are selling more than 180 art pieces at the auction. Highlights of the upcoming sale will be exhibited at the Mansfield Traquair Centre, Mansfield Place on 20-21 June. The latest artist to join the growing portfolio of leading British artists promoted by Red Rag is Scottish artist Deborah Phillips. Deborah Phillips was born in Dundee and is the daughter of well known Scottish artist, Douglas Phillips. She attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee and graduated with BA (honours) in 1987. She is known for her lively and colourful landscape art works of the Scottish countryside. 08 August 2011 - Society of Scottish Artists The Society of Scottish Artists, which was founded in 1891 to promote contemporary art and artists in Scotland,is holding its Professional members exhibition from 8 - 29 August. The art show is taking place at the Glasgow Art Club in Bath Street, Glasgow. 02 August 2011 - Scottish artist in Bath Ayshire based artist Alison Thomas is showing her art work in Bath for the first time at the Red Rag Gallery. Known for her paintings of circus performers and animals Alison produces paintings in an appealing naive style. The latest paintings feature jugglers, high wire performers and acrobats and are on show as part of a show of Naive art in the famous Georgian city. Alison Thomas is a working artist from Ayrshire and studied textiles at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, from 1992-1996. King was born in 1953 and studied art at the Glasgow Art School. Following that he taught Art and Design in Scottish schools for over 30 years. In 2010 he retired from teaching to focus on painting professionally. Since then his paintings have become highly collectable and are in many art collections across the UK, Europe, North America and Japan. Peter King is fascinated by the aspects of changing moods of light, weather and seasons. The sources of his ideas are the seasonal effects of nature on the surrounding environment. Colour and the tactile qualities of paint are essential to his painting style. The light, colour and weathered landscape of Kintyre, The Clyde Valley and the vast panorama of land and sky dominated by Tinto Hill and the Scottish Borders are a constant source of ideas and inspiration to him. Red Rag have announced that the August art exhibition will feature leading Scottish still life artist Jane Cruickshank. The show opens 28 August but Jane's new paintings are already being snapped up by entusiastic collectors. Jane Cruickshank was born in 1976 and studied Fine Art at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen. He was born in the Glasgow suburb of Coker in 1930 and later moved to the coastal Scottish town of Troon in Ayrshire. He was educated at the Glasgow School of Art between 1949 and 1953. Crozier was known for painting landscapes which overcame the boundaries between representational and abstract genres. His work often contained references to nature, although in later years he moved towards a more representational language. His abstract landscapes and still life painting used colour to convey an emotional intensity Following his graduation from Glasgow School of Art Crozier moved to London and in 1949 and 1953.Crozier exhibited his art works in London, Glasgow, Dublin and all over Europe. He was an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. He died peacefully aged 81 at home on 12 July 2011. 08 July 2011 - Scottish Art Exhibition
The English Cotswolds takes on a Scottish theme this weekend when the annual Red Rag Scottish Art Show commences at the Cotswold gallery in Stow on the Wold. Bell who was born in Ayr paints mainly landscapes and seascapes of Scotland, particularly along the Ayrshire coast. Leading Scottish artist Simon Laurie is the latest name to join the highly successfull portfolio of Red Rag Gallery artists. Laurie who was born in Glasgow in 1964 and studied at the Glasgow School of Fine Art is a member of the Royal Scottish Watercolourists (RSW) and the prestigious Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI). His abstract paintings are inspired by everyday objects and the ever changing Scottish landscape. Simon Laurie's bold, vibrant paintings have been said to combine elements of the St Ives School with the rich tradition of the Scottish colourists. The milestone will coincide with a new exhibition 'Pure Gold' which features British art and opens 9 February. The British art show takes place at the Mall Galleries in London, will contain paintings by Edgar Degas, Walter Sickert, John Singer Sargent and Augustus John. Although the FBA is only 50 years old the individual art societies which make up the Federation date back to 1823, and the exhibition contains the art works of British artists from then to the current day. John has donated numerous art works and profits from his paintings to worthy causes and described the OBE as "a simply marvellous honour". He started his artistic career drawing life figures, winning a prize at the Glasgow School of Art. After gaining a diploma in education at Jordanhill College, he began a 25-year teaching career in Argyll in 1973. In 1997 he decided to earn a living as a full-time painter, spending most of the next six years painting in Argyll and the Hebrides. Over the last 13 years his Scottish art work has become hugely popular. 08 December 2010 - ROI Annual Art Show opens in London The annual art exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, opens at the Mall Galleries in London on Wednesday 8 December and continues until Sunday 19 December. It is the only major British art society that is devoted exclusively to oil painting. The show features a wide variety of contemporary landscape, figurative and still life paintings by emerging and established artists working in oil today. She beat Dexter Dalwood, Angela de la Cruz and The Otolith Group to take the award and was presented with the 25,000 prize at a ceremony at Tate Britain. 20 November 2010 - More needed from Arts Budget The Scottish government wants Creative Scotland who is responsible for arts and film to "achieve more" after agreeing to maintain its 2011/12 budget. The budget remains at 35.5m. The government estimates creative industries support more than 60,000 jobs. More than 140 art works by the group are being shown before the show transfers to London. The Glasgow Boys rebelled against the Scottish art scene of the late-19th Century and caused uproar when they held their first major art show in 1885. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum was still the most popular Scottish tourist attraction in 2009, but visitor numbers dropped by 5% to just over 1.3m. He was born in Fife in 1931 and died in Renfrewshire 7 January 2010. Jimmy lived in Renfrewshire for more than 30 years enjoying the change of colours and the light on the sea as the seasons changed. The Royal Mail's New Year stamp collection for 2010 features what it says are ten of the most iconic album covers of the last 40 years. Each depicts a famous album cover with a disc coming out of the sleeve and appearing 'outside' the stamp. One of the stamps features David Bowie's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (1972) album cover.Heddon Street in London's West End is the scene for the painting. Mellis was a pivotal figure in modern British art leading the migration of artists to St Ives in Cornwall from 1939. Educated at Edinburgh College of Art Mellis's teachers included the Scottish colourist Samuel John Peploe. William Gear and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham were also fellow art students.
