British artist Christian Moore uses minimalist composition to create maximum impact with his unique bronze paintings.
After leaving a career in fashion in London and moving to rural Scotland to raise his family, artist Christian Moore found his focus shifted to the natural beauty of the landscape surrounding him and this is reflected, not only in the subject matter of his work but, within his use of organic materials. The clarity he has found in his new, earthy, wilder setting, away from the city, is directly translated into his calm, pensive, nature focused paintings.
At first glance the paired back, unassuming, nature of his artwork could be misinterpreted as simplistic, when the execution is anything but, on closer inspection of this innovative artist’s work, you’ll see how the subject matter of the painting is formed of bronze, which Christian Moore sculpts and cold casts in his studio. This focal point of the painting is brought into sharp relief by the light, delicately textured background which is built up from multiple layers of mineral paint on a cracked plaster filled hessian board. A foreground constructed from the finest white sand dried to a hard surface is then the base for the shadow of the forged subject, added in last for the final, grounding, touch.
This labour intensive process of Christian Moore’s art requires patience, passion and a real devotion to the work. It’s a wonder to behold and the magnetism of the piece is enriched by the knowledge that this painstaking technique was developed and honed by Christian Moore himself.
