Scottish Art and Artists at Red Rag Gallery
Artist: Jean FEENEY

Born in York, Jean now lives in the heart of highland Perthshire. She has Scottish roots through her father’s family and went back to live north of the border over 20 years ago. However, it was her first visit to Ardnamurchan and the West Coast in 1990 that provided her with her greatest artistic inspiration where she fell in love with the landscape, light and colour she found there. These elements have been the centre of her creative output ever since.

Jean’s love of art stems from her childhood, but it wasn’t until much later when she undertook intensive fine art training and simultaneously, she began to develop her own style. Her subjects focus on the raw beauty of some of the remotest areas in Scotland and beyond and she is well-known in the art world for her energetic and sculptural use of paint. It has often been remarked that her work displays a keen eye for detail alongside sheer joy of application. Jean has worked in a variety of media and her trademark is strong, bold colours combined with energy, light and atmosphere. Her main influences are the Scottish colourists and some of the German expressionists. Van Gogh is also a dominant influence because of his love of yellow and use of thickly applied and textured paint.

Jean’s work is popular both here and abroad, represented in many private and corporate collections. In addition to Red Rag Scottish Art Gallery. Jean Feeney’s work has been exhibited at other leading galleries. Each painting at Red Rag is sourced from Jean’s studio and, like all Red Rag Scottish Art and Contemporary Art, it can be shipped worldwide.

Today is no exception you will find Red Rag Scottish Art Gallery has an extensive collection of Seascape art and paintings by leading contemporary artists.

Human beings have always had an intimate relationship with the water. Given the amount of the earth’s surface which is covered in water and the often unpredictable and life-changing nature of the sea, it is little wonder that seascapes have been such a popular subject for so long and no surprise that seascape paintings have an important place in the history of art.

Seascape paintings have a long history in both the Eastern and Western worlds. The walls of homes have been adorned with seascape paintings since the art of the secular painting first began to overtake religious works in numbers and importance.

As a country with an extensive coastline, paintings of seascapes have always had a special attraction to Scottish artists. All the seascape paintings at Red Rag showcase the talent of Scottish painters and their ability to depict changing light on water and rapidly altering climatic conditions. Many of the Scottish artists who have painted these seascape paintings are also talented landscape painters, or worked in other genres as well as seascapes, such as still life or portraiture.
