Marine Art by Judith BRIDGLAND
Flowers Blown in the Wind, Causeway Coast Scottish Art and Artists at Red Rag Gallery Judith Bridgland was born in 1962 in Australia, and trained in Glasgow, Scotland where she now lives and works. She graduated from Glasgow University in 1984 with a Masters degree with Honours in Fine Art. Judith creates paintings very much in the Scottish colourist tradition. Her art works are bold, exuberant and vibrantly joyful landscapes Working in oils, her paintings use bold, vigorous, rhythmical strokes of impasto paint combined with delicate brushwork. This gives an exciting texture to the paint surface along with a sense of abstraction, which reflects natures contrasts and delicate harmonies. However, whilst the work is very painterly, it also has a strong sense of place. Talking about her paintings Judith says: 'My work combines a love of almost sculptural texture, and contrasts between elements such as the abstract and the figurative, organic and geometric, thick and thin paint. Landscape is not just about the land; it is about the experience of a very particular moment, and the scenes I paint are all very precise, particular places, ones which I often return to again and again. As such, they are records of a particular moment which is now gone, but they also of speak of a cumulative experience. So as well as being an actual place, the landscape is also an expression of me, a form of self-portrait of an emotional landscape.' Winner of the 1999 MacRoberts Open Prize, the 2009 House for An Art Lover Award, and the Glasgow Art Club Award in 2016, Judith is also a member of the Paisley Art Institute, and a regular exhibitor at the Royal Glasgow Institute and Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. She has had sell-out shows in Scotland, London and the rest of the UK as well as exhibiting further afield in America, Russia and Sweden. Today Judiths work can be found in the collections of The Royal Bank of Scotland, British Midland, The University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian University, and privately worldwide.
