Donald MacLean (b.1962) is a Scottish artist producing still life and landscape paintings. Brought up in Paisley, Scotland, Donald studied Fine Art (sculpture) at Glasgow School of Art from 1980-85. Read more
Much of his student work explored organic forms and textures through clay and wax modelling, and bronze casting.
After graduating, Donald pursued a life-long interest in the theatre. Starting with community and educational theatre around central Scotland, he then moved to Cardiff to take up Postgraduate studies in theatre design and production at University College Cardiff, returning to Scotland in 1989. Donald started to pursue a freelance career in theatre design and scenic art with many Scottish theatre companies, including: The Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, The Citizens Theatre and the Tron Theatre, Glasgow and Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet as well as production and event management such as the millennium and tercentenary events for the town of Campbeltown, Argyll. He also taught on the technical theatre course at Coatbridge College.
Donald continued to work in theatre into the early 2000s. Following a move from Glasgow to the west coast of Scotland he decided to pursue painting again. He began to exhibit at local galleries and The Paisley Art Institute. In addition to Red Rag Art Gallery, he has exhibited in galleries from Glasgow to Devon as well as art fairs in Edinburgh and Chelsea.
Donald was initially inspired by the Scottish landscape around his home, but he has since gradually developed an interest in the ‘design’ aspects of still life painting allowing him to examine themes of colour and composition. This has gradually developed into a stylistically more contemporary approach, which has led him to return to some of the themes of his college years sculptures – this time exploring organic plant forms in painting terms of colour and pattern. Each painting at Red Rag is sourced from the Donald MacLean artist studio and like all Red Rag Contemporary art it can be shipped worldwide.
