Gerard Burns first career in the Arts was as a professional singer, guitarist and songwriter. After this Burns spent ten years as a Scottish art teacher, before as he jokes ' I gave it up to risk full time poverty and starvation as a artist'.
Gerard Burns has been a full time artist since 1998. Today his oil paintings display a very distinctive style, skillfully blending the traditional with a contemporary representation.
Gerard Burns determination to do things his way paid off in significantly in 2003 when he won the coveted Not The Turner Prize. Burns painting of a young girl leading a white bull was selected from hundreds of other British artist submissions as the winning painting with a £20.000 first prize.
Gerard Burns has widely exhibited at a number of other leading contemporary British Modern art galleries including the Royal Glasgow Institute where he was a prize winner in 1997.
