Hamish MacDonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1935 and died in 2008. He trained at the famous Glasgow School of Art from 1963 to 1967.

Hamish developed a successful career in Education teaching Art in Scottish schools. From 1968 MacDonald successfully combined painting with teaching and also guest lectured throughout Scotland. In 1991 he retired from his post as an Art Department Principal to concentrate fully on the development of his painting.

Influences on Hamish's work were diverse. They included the Impressionists and the Scottish Colourists and especially the art works of William Gillies and Joan Eardley. Hamish MacDonald paintings were mostly painted in oils and mixed media. His broad, fluid style and bold palette are in keeping with the Scottish Colourist tradition whilst his ability to capture the atmosphere and vitality of his subject is enhanced by a confident and mature style. His very individual approach to contemporary painting created an immediacy and spontaneity to his art. Hamish is now widely regarded as one of Scotland's most successful contemporary artists.

Historically inspiration for Hamish MacDonald paintings came from his roots - Scottish Landscapes and Scottish Marine scenes. Later in life MacDonald extended his interest producing contemporary paintings of Venice, Cornish scenes and still life.

Contemporary paintings and prints by Hamish MacDonald are becoming increasingly collectable and have proved a good Art Investment. Numerous public and private art collections have bought paintings by MacDonald including: HRH The Duke of Edinburgh; Kelvingrove one of Edinburgh Art Galleries; Paisley Art Gallery; and the Scottish First Minister.

Paintings by Semi Abstract artists available from Red Rag Galleries.
