Scottish Art and Artists at Red Rag Gallery
Artist: Jenny MATTHEWS

Jenny Matthews RSW was born in 1964 in Montreal, Canada. She studied Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1986.

Having always been inspired by the nature surrounding her, most especially the native flora, Scottish watercolourist Jenny Matthews RSW is predominantly known for her celebrated paintings of flowers. Her passion and talent for capturing the subject matter stems from the very beginnings of her artistic journey and was notably nurtured and refined during her Botanical Illustration elective at Edinburgh College of Art.

In the same way that the natural subject surrounding Jenny Matthews RSW is central to her work so are the characteristics of her chosen medium, watercolour. The serendipitous variations that occur during the application of watercolour stimulates a more explorative and intuitive way of working, which Jenny Matthews RSW finds a source of constant inspiration. Playing with the balance of water to pigment ratio allows work to be both highly detailed or more abstract. These variations lend themselves to the natural and often minute variations within the forms of flowers and have inspired Jenny Matthews to create unique works within the paradigm of a fairly traditional subject matter.

Having recently been elected as a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, Jenny Matthews'  list of achievements don't show signs of slowing down anytime soon. This honour comes as a welcomed addition to the many accolades Jenny Matthews has received previously and puts her at the forefront of contemporary painters in watercolour.
