Art by Simon LAURIE Scottish Art and Artists at Red Rag Gallery Simon Laurie was born in Glasgow in 1964, studying at the Glasgow School of Fine Art between 1982 and 1987. Simon Laurie has developed a very individual abstract style; his paintings are typically inspired by everyday objects, fish, boats and religious symbols as well as Scottish life and society. Simon's artwork has been said to combine the purity and formalism of the St Ives School with the rich tradition of the Scottish colourists. His paintings are full of colour and enduring interest, displaying an elegant sense of space and perspective. Using bold and vibrant colours Simon Laurie creates paintings which have a resonance with collage artworks. Each painting is created using bright acrylics in a simple form with perfect balance and deeply satisfying compositions. This distinctive style has earned Simon many prestigious art awards from the Scottish societies including: 'Teachers' Whisky Travel Award, RGI; the Alexander Graham Munro Award, RSW; and the John Cunningham Award at RGI Annual Exhibition. His artwork is also held by well-known collections including the Contemporary Arts Society, London and the Aberdeen Art Gallery. In 1991 Simon Laurie was elected a Member of the Royal Scottish Watercolourists (RSW) and a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI) in 2000. In addition to Red Rag Scottish Art Gallery Simon Lauries artwork has been exhibited at other leading Scottish Art Galleries. Each painting at Red Rag is sourced from the Simon Laurie artist studio and like all Red Rag Scottish art and Contemporary art it can be shipped worldwide.
