Painting: Still Life With Shells

A plate of beautifully depicted seashells are presented on a plate. The plate and the other elements of ''Still life With Shells'' hang in a precarious perspective for us to admire. Deep colours are contrasted with a darker background and an impression of texture in the foreground is contrasted with the deep of the night sky.

Jock MacInnes paintings have a quietness about them. Unusually he prepares all his own painting grounds, a type of gesso on board. Then with great skill, MacInnes not only draws and paints on to the surface he also abrades and scrapes into the canvas. In doing so MacInnes creates a strong feeling of atmosphere and mood.
