Stromness in the south-west of Orkney is a place to shelter from the strong tides and winds of the island. In Viking times Stromness was called ''Hamnavoe'', meaning ''peaceful or safe harbour''.

Stuart Sim who was born on Orkney, has depicted the main street, empty except for one man who is making his way along the side of the street in this acrylic painting. There is a timeless quality in Stuart Sim''s painting style.

Influences on Stuart Sim and his paintings include artists: Titian, Turner, Bonnard, Kitaj, Matisse, and Hopper. Sim has won a number of art awards including Arnold Clark Award from the Paisley Institute of Art.
