The character ''Sniffy'' who is considered to be the world''s greatest art critic has featured in many of Joe Hargan contemporary paintings. In the painting ''Reflections on Venice'' Sniffy is painted lying flat out on a grand piano. Behind him is a painting by one of the great masters '' Canaletto. It is a view of the Venice featuring the Doge''s Palace and the Riva degli Schiavoni''.

As with all Joe Hargan contemporary paintings, there is an element of surrealism and ambiguity in the art work. The inclusion of seemingly unrelated objects creates mystery and interest, in this case the wine and dog. It appears Sniffy has much to reflect upon and is indeed reflecting well on the surface of the piano
