Lesley Anne Derks: Scottish contemporary art, artist and paintings

Lesley Anne Derks studied at the Glasgow School of Art and the University of Barcelona.

From an early age Lesley Anne found lights at night were a fascination for her especially when combined with the effects of the dramatic Scottish weather conditions including rain, sleet and snow. Living in an industrial town in central Scottish area reinforced this fascination and the lights of man made industrial scenes are a strong influence in her art works.

Lesley Anne Derks aims to produce paintings that allow the viewer to experience their own version of the subtleties of movement, light and sound that she herself experiences when producing the art work. Recently successful series of contemporary paintings have included New York and Hong Kong nightscapes and skylines.

Lesley Anne Derks contemporary paintings are much more than a depictive representation. They are textured using many layers of different mediums. As the paintings develop Lesley omits areas or replaces them. She may peel back to an earlier state thereby revealing what went on before. The painting begins to take on a different direction from the original source material.
